Tottenham Hotspur are laying down plans to secure a key signing, eyeing Sporting Lisbon’s prolific striker Viktor Gyokeres in the upcoming summer transfer session. The Swedish powerhouse is having a stellar season, having scored 40 goals and assisted 10 more across 41 appearances.
Gyokeres has been the star in the 2024-25 Primeira Liga, finding the back of the net 28 times in just 25 games, and helping Sporting to a slim lead over Benfica at the top of the standings. Although his contract runs for another three years, Sporting might struggle to fend off interest from top-tier European clubs aiming to snap him up.
Tottenham have thrown their hat in the ring, emerging as serious contenders. Word is that Ange Postecoglou’s squad is ready to lay down a compelling offer for the former Coventry City ace, who’s seen as a potential heir to Harry Kane’s throne. Since Kane’s shift to Bayern Munich in 2023, Spurs have looked to Richarlison and Dominic Solanke to fill the void, though neither has fully delivered.
Solanke, brought on board from Bournemouth for £65 million, has put up just 11 goals over 33 appearances in all contests, leaving Tottenham keen to beef up their strike force. Gyokeres’ stellar record of 83 goals and 25 assists in a mere 91 games for Sporting signals him as a tantalizing choice for the North London side.
Nevertheless, Tottenham’s lackluster domestic run could dampen their prospects. Stuck at 14th in the Premier League standings, their best shot at Champions League entry might come from clinching the Europa League title, with their next big hurdle being the quarter-final against Eintracht Frankfurt.
At the same time, Manchester United and Chelsea are keeping a close watch on Gyokeres. United’s boss, Ruben Amorim, looking to rekindle their past Sporting success. Some reports hint that the striker leans towards joining Liverpool, Arsenal, or Manchester City, with the Reds currently leading the Premier League race.
As the summer window looms, Gyokeres is poised to be one of the most in-demand forwards, with Tottenham expected to face stiff competition to land his coveted signature.
