Okay, so here’s the thing. Jon Gruden, you know him, right? The guy who used to coach and has a well, let’s call it a “colorful” commentary style? Anyway, he had this whole chat on Pardon My Take about what the Steelers are up to with their quarterback situation. Like, what the heck’s happening with them snagging Will Howard late in the draft? I guess maybe Gruden spent time with Howard at Ohio State, who knows really, but he’s certainly not sold on the Steelers’ 2025 strategy. It’s a bit of a head-scratcher.
And here’s the kicker – Gruden’s going off after just the first night of the draft. It’s like, alright Jon, take a breath maybe? He’s chatting with these guys, Big Cat and PFT Commenter – vibrant names, huh? – and he starts questioning the big bet the Steelers seem to have on Aaron Rodgers being their big hero.
“They’ve got like one quarterback,” he says. And I’m scratching my head because, first of all, that’s before they even picked Howard. There’s this other dude, Skylar Thompson – does he just not count in Gruden’s mind? Anyway, the Steelers’ future still feels as clear as mud, like who’s really gonna take the snaps when it matters?
Fast forward – or is it rewind? – to Gruden being all skeptical about Rodgers. “He’s not in camp,” Gruden says. Yeah, and I’m thinking, true enough, dude. Can’t just waltz in and expect magic to happen. You need to, uh, build camaraderie and all that jazz.
Rodgers was kind of beat up with the Jets, numbers not so hot. When was the last time he threw below 90.5 as QB rating? Man, that’s a bummer. And there were those games… the Broncos, Vikings, Bills – oh! The infamous red line game! Anyway, things didn’t exactly click.
Gruden’s like, “Why didn’t they grab a QB at No. 21?” I’m over here, half nodding, half shrugging. And then there’s Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders dropping like crazy – who saw that coming? Still, even with Howard in their pocket, Gruden’s not exactly on the Rodgers-to-Steelers train. Like, what if Rodgers doesn’t even sign? Ah, football drama, never a dull moment.
