Who’s Confident in Ohio State Football’s 2025 Defense? Departing OSU Stars Weigh In
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

In Indianapolis, Ohio State’s caliber is evident: eight defensive starters from their 2024 squad have earned invites to the NFL combine. This impressive turnout underscores not only the talent they’re sending off but also highlights the significant void left in their championship-winning defense, especially in the defensive line department. Anchored by standout players like Jack Sawyer, J.T. Tuimoloau, Ty Hamilton, and Tyleik Williams, these linemen have formed the backbone of Ohio State’s formidable defense and are anticipated to be sought after in the upcoming draft.

However, there’s no need for Buckeyes fans to worry just yet. The departing veterans have diligently nurtured the up-and-coming talents, ensuring a seamless transition for the 2025 lineup. In line to take over are defensive ends Caden Curry and Kenyatta Jackson, along with tackles Kayden McDonald and Eddrick Houston, all under the expert guidance of position coach Larry Johnson.

“You’re looking at four future NFL players,” remarked Sawyer with confidence. “I cannot wait to see what they accomplish together in their first year. They’ve got immense potential, and under coach Johnson’s direction, I expect a phenomenal season from them.”

Curry and Jackson, both having tasted considerable game time last season, have already shown their mettle. McDonald has proven to be a formidable force in halting runs, and Houston, a five-star recruit just a year ago, is ready to make waves.

“Eddrick is sizing up to be among the best, thanks to his exceptional blend of size, speed, and raw power,” Sawyer observed. “With another year under his belt, he’s set to make a significant impact as a sophomore.”

Tuimoloau chimed in, emphasizing the depth of the talent pool. “We might be young, but we’ve got exceptional talent on our hands,” he noted.

Hamilton, expressing faith in the new lineup, shared similar optimism. “I don’t anticipate any slump at all,” he assured. “Despite their youth now, watch them pull together and perform magnificently when the season rolls around. They’re destined to surprise everyone.”

Resonating with this confidence is linebacker Cody Simon, who also has high hopes for his group. With Sonny Styles stepping up for his senior year, expectations are sky-high. Styles, who has become vital to the team, was suggested as a frontrunner for the prestigious Block O jersey in 2025.

Sonny’s journey from safety to linebacker wasn’t without its hurdles, particularly early on. But by season’s end, his growth was evident. “Sonny is one of the most dedicated players I’ve had the pleasure of knowing,” Sawyer shared. Growing up as friends with Sonny’s older brother, Sawyer has witnessed Sonny’s evolution firsthand. “What a transformation he’s made. As an athlete and person, he’s astounding. Going into his second year as a linebacker, he’s poised for a big leap forward, embodying all the traits of a top contender.”

Simon spotlighted Arvell Reese, who saw part-time action last year, as poised for stardom in 2025, alongside Payton Pierce. “Reese is a beast,” Simon said. “He’s got unparalleled closing speed and will turn heads next year.”

Returning to bolster the secondary are All-American safety Caleb Downs and cornerback Davison Igbinosun. It’s a daunting task to replace eight starters, but Simon remains unfazed by the hurdles. “Our preparation has been rigorous, possibly unmatched. I’m confident our team will step in and rise to the occasion, ready to take on those new responsibilities and clearly reload.”
