Barcelona’s dynamic midfielder, Gavi, isn’t holding back ahead of their crucial Champions League tie against Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday. At just 20, he’s been pigeonholed by some as merely a physical force on the pitch, and now the young Spaniard is pushing back against that label.
Speaking candidly at a pre-match press conference, Gavi addressed his detractors: "A lot of people think I don’t know how to play football. They really have no f***ing idea. That’s the truth, but I get it—it’s football. Everyone has their opinions, and that’s okay."
Gavi’s journey this season has been one of resilience and determination. Early on, he faced a tough setback, sidelined by a significant ACL injury in late 2023. However, since making his comeback in November, he’s steadily worked his way back, featuring in 29 matches and netting three goals.
Under the guidance of manager Hansi Flick, Gavi has been exploring a variety of roles within the midfield. Though he admits he’s still chasing top form, he’s thankful for Flick’s unwavering support and insight. "There’s a great understanding with Flick," he shared. "Returning from a long injury is no easy feat. One year out takes its toll, but the coach has shown a lot of faith in me. I’m thrilled to have him leading the team."
Flick’s decision to try Gavi in different positions appears to be unlocking new dimensions in his game, boosting his versatility. "Playing across various roles can only improve my overall play," Gavi explained. "I’ve been slotted in as a No. 10 quite a bit, but I’m also comfortable in a double pivot or even as a No. 6, and that versatility is enhancing my growth."
Reflecting on his progress, Gavi acknowledges the reality of having a less dominant role following his injury. "It’s normal not to be as pivotal right away," he noted. "Yet, the strides I’ve made in my recovery make me incredibly happy. If you’d told me I’d be in this position when I first got back, I would’ve gladly accepted it."
As Barcelona gears up for their Champions League quarter-final clash against Dortmund, their ambitions remain sky-high under Flick. With a Copa del Rey final against Real Madrid on the horizon and a slender lead in LaLiga, the hopes for a treble are alive. Nevertheless, Gavi remains focused on taking each match as it comes.
"We’re having an outstanding season," he said, "but that doesn’t mean we feel undefeatable. Winning every time isn’t guaranteed in football. We need to stay humble in every encounter, keep reminding ourselves of our journey, and stay grounded. There’s still plenty of football to play."
