Exploring Italy’s ‘Motor Valley’: Drive Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and More
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Cruising the scenic roads of Emilia-Romagna in a rented Lamborghini is an experience that feels extravagantly pricey, ringing in at about 14 euros, or $15, per minute. It’s hard not to feel the sting of those figures when you consider that just a handful of coins can buy you a glass of the region’s finest wine. Yet, remarkably, the steep cost comes with an equally exhilarating payoff that seems worth every cent.

The thrill of pushing a supercar to its limits is an adrenaline rush that hits you right in the core. During my own test drive, I found myself howling with glee at the acceleration, only to have the guide in the passenger seat gently remind me—twice, in fact—that I might want to keep the volume down. It was only then I realized I was making any noise at all.

The region known as Italy’s “Motor Valley” is legendary for housing a collection of iconic automotive brands, including Lamborghini, Ferrari, Maserati, and Ducati. Nestled close to Bologna, these companies offer enthusiasts a deep dive into the glamorous world of supercars, with their workshops and factories just a short drive away.

Each brand in this mechanical wonderland provides a host of experiences — from factory tours and driving simulators to vintage car exhibitions and gift shops. Walking into these expansive factory floors, you might be reminded of the sheer scale of an Amazon warehouse. Under the bright, overhead lights, the carefully choreographed assembly lines unfold. Teams clad in industrial uniforms work tirelessly, attaching parts and ensuring every component is bolted in perfectly. The hum of machinery and the rhythmic clanging of tools create a symphony of productive sounds.

Ferrari’s Maranello campus boasts a theme park-like atmosphere, appealing to a broad spectrum of visitors. At the adjacent cafe, people-watching offers quite the scene: teenagers absorbed in the latest mobile games and die-hard fans animatedly discussing the intricacies of Formula 1 history. You’ll often spot couples where one partner, a dedicated automobile enthusiast, eager to share their passion for Ferrari with the unconvinced, yet interested, other half.

Ferrari enjoys a particular allure, being the only Italian luxury car company still competing in Formula 1 and operating independently. Its colorful history, thanks in part to charismatic founder Enzo Ferrari, has been immortalized on the big screen time and again.

Even though the Ferrari “factory tour” doesn’t grant actual access inside the factory, the experience doesn’t lose its charm. Visitors are taken on a shuttle around the premises, with guides explaining the activities inside the buildings that you pass by.

In contrast, Lamborghini’s factory tour delivers a rich, immersive experience. The vibrant supercars—ranging from sleek matte blacks to striking yellows—look like spacecraft, journeying through a hive of employee action on GPS-guided platforms.

Across the street, Bull Bar offers a spot for a quick espresso. It’s a favored haunt for Lamborghini employees, who are often open to chatting with supercar enthusiasts dropping by.

Maserati’s factory tour is the most extensive, clocking in at about ninety minutes. It includes a fascinating visit to their engine testing lab where engines are pushed to their limits in isolated rooms, monitored by a web of wires that lends a sci-fi feel.

Ducati’s factory, though smaller and less lit, allows for an intimate exploration of motorcycle crafting. Here, you’ll recognize similar robotic vehicles to those used by Lamborghini, as both brands are part of the Volkswagen Group.

The public exhibitions presented by these manufacturers blend elements of museums and showrooms. Ferrari, despite underwhelming factory tours, redeems itself with stellar museums rich with history, notably showcasing a peerless collection of Formula 1 race cars at their Maranello site.

Lamborghini offers a stunning display of classic models enhanced by unique artworks, while Ducati’s museum presents a chronological gallery of racing bikes, inviting visitors young and old to engage with its historic pieces.

Children, in particular, seem to revel in the hands-on opportunities, revving imaginary engines and shouting to their companions in universal excitement. Cars, with all their grandeur, prompt ethical considerations in today’s climate-conscious world. Yet, all manufacturers in the Motor Valley are slowly steering towards sustainable solutions with electric vehicle developments.

The luxury of supercars, though starkly ostentatious, represents a pinnacle of automotive engineering, celebrated as much for sheer beauty as for raw power. With the right circumstances, anyone can experience this, albeit for a price. Places like Bull Bar allow curious souls to indulge in a relatively quick but substantial test drive, ensuring you get a true taste of what these mechanical marvels have to offer.

Even starting at a slow crawl, circling the village surrounding the Lamborghini factory, you sense something transformative. It’s the design, the proximity to the ground, the spaceship dashboard. But as you hit the open road, and your guide gives the green light, the sensation becomes all the more electrifying.

Behind the wheel of a Lamborghini Huracan Spyder, every sensory organ is on high alert. The instant the engine roars, you’re thrust back into your seat, watching the road blur by. The pace accelerates beyond belief as the guide suggests pushing it even further, and suddenly, everything around you warps with speed.

“Slow down,” comes the calm instruction from the passenger seat, as if noting the time of day. Your reaction? Adrenaline coursing through your veins, head spinning with exhilaration. And so, another flourish of speed only amplifies that high on your route back.

For a different thrill, consider the Autodromo di Modena, where for a modest fee, you can lap the track in whatever vehicle you arrive with. Even in a modest hatchback, maneuvering the track is its own wild ride—a dance of deft driving and controlled speed.

So, do I recollect shouting in delight? I just might have.
