Bernhard Langer’s Masters Triumph and the Young Winners of Augusta
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Greetings from Augusta, Georgia! It’s Monday here at Augusta National, and though the course remains closed due to rain, the press building is bustling with activity. I’m stationed here, surrounded by my fellow journalists as we gear up for the Masters week ahead. Eight days into my two-week stint, I’m in high spirits alongside my colleagues who have just arrived for the big event.

Yesterday, I had the chance to witness the Drive, Chip, and Putt finals for the first time. It was truly the best way to dive into the Masters frenzy. Major weeks come with their own set of pressures, but watching those young talents showcasing their skills with such joy was the perfect antidote to any pre-week jitters. Their sheer enthusiasm and camaraderie were heartwarming.

The Sunday preceding the Masters is arguably the most delightful day in golfing circles at Augusta. Past Masters champions play alongside the youngest competitors, all of whom are just brimming with excitement. The kids not only cheer for one another but, after making big putts, run to embrace their families. Their candid interviews are the cherry on top.

Let’s learn a bit about those who came out on top in each age division.

Ellie Kim made her grand entrance into the Drive, Chip, and Putt scene by winning the girls 7-9 category. Introduced to golf by her dad during the pandemic, Ellie exemplifies dedication and gratitude. She credits her victory to hard work and unwavering support from her father, expressing how special it is to stand on Augusta’s hallowed grounds.

One unforgettable moment from the finals was when Ellie’s rivals quickly surrounded her in celebration. It was a touching display of sportsmanship. By the way, did you know Ellie’s role models include her dad and Taylor Swift? Just curious, Ellie, which of Taylor’s songs are your go-to?

Up next, we have Bella Simoes, who triumphed in the girls 10-11 division. Bella’s responses to the finals’ qualifying questions were insightful. She captures golf’s essence with her thoughtful answers, highlighting the challenge of accepting things beyond one’s control. Her admiration for golfing legends like Tiger Woods and Nelly Korda stems from their game-changing impact and inspiring qualities. As for her Masters Champions dinner dream menu? Shrimp Alfredo pasta—sounds delicious!

Alexandra Phung is no stranger to triumph at Augusta. She snagged her second win in the Drive, Chip, and Putt by sinking a tough putt. Before turning 14, Alexandra has multiple Augusta wins to her name, marking her as one to watch. Her brother Leo tops her list of favorite golfers for his constant support, helping her triumph along the way.

Abigail Henriksen came out on top in her first championship appearance, sinking a 15-footer to claim victory in the 14-15 division. One can only imagine the celebrations awaiting her at school.

And now, let’s switch gears to the boys.

Joshua Hooper clinched the win in the 7-9-year-old division, perhaps partly thanks to his pre-game ritual involving AC/DC’s "Thunderstruck." His post-win interview was brief and straightforward—sometimes, less is more. His Masters dinner picks? Fried calamari, veal saltimbocca, and an Oreo blizzard for dessert. Sign me up!

In the 10-11 category, Dawson Dial celebrated his win with plans to stay up all night. I wonder if he managed it after such an exhilarating day. His Champions Dinner menu suggests a pasta bar extravaganza with all the fixings.

Hudson Justus left his mark in the 12-13 division, not just by his win but by the heartfelt embrace he shared with his father, a testament to what such victories mean to the young golfers and their families.

Anthony Wu drew inspiration from his sister’s previous appearance, and his efforts paid off as he seized the 14-15 division title. Watching talented siblings succeed is always heartening.

Now, let’s talk about Bernhard Langer and his eye-catching new ride. My colleagues and I visited West Lake Country Club for a chat with Langer ahead of his final Masters. It’s hard not to be impressed by the personalized Mercedes-Benz gifted to him, complete with Masters logos and his signature. From the embroidered headrests to the center console, every detail celebrates Langer’s illustrious career.

As a journalist covering my final Masters someday, I can only hope to receive such a tribute!

Now that’s a wrap from this captivating Monday in Augusta. Stay tuned for more updates from the Masters, where the golf and stories promise to be as riveting as ever!
