I was thinking about wedges the other day. You know, those things in golf that look cool but I never really understood? Well, TaylorMade has these Milled Grind wedges, the MG5s. I’m not even sure why, but they’ve won a bunch of "Most Wanted" awards. Go figure. Somehow, they’re still kind of under-the-radar. Seems like someone at TaylorMade got a wild hair and decided to mix things up with the MG5s.
So here’s the big deal with these wedges: they’re fully forged. No kidding. Apparently, golfers dig that soft feel you get from forging. They’re made from soft carbon steel, which sounds like something from a sci-fi movie, but really just means they have this nice, consistent feel.
Oh, and milling! There’s milling everywhere. On the sole, face, grooves—I’m starting to see why they’re a big deal. It’s kinda like when you get extra cheese on a pizza. You don’t know why, but it just works.
The design? TaylorMade tweaked the shape a bit. They’re calling it “refined” — like they smoothed out the edges a little. Feels like they’re trying to make it look all symmetrical and stuff. Personal taste and all that, but hey, maybe it’s prettier now. At least, prettier at address, if that’s a thing people care about.
And the grooves! Everybody loves grooves with fancy names, right? These are “saw-milled grooves.” I don’t know what it means, but they sound intense. They’ve got steeper walls, sharper edges, and they follow USGA limits closely. They say it means more spin, which I think is good. Like, they’ll keep spinning even if it’s wet out there, thanks to this Spin Tread Technology.
Grind options—now there’s a rabbit hole. There’s SB, SC, SX, HB, LB…and, wait for it, TW Grind, like Tiger Woods! Different shapes for different swings and stuff. It’s like picking a character in a video game, but for your golf swing style. And apparently, Tiger’s preferences come with a price tag (not shocking, really).
Price-wise, we’re looking at $199. Well, $219.99 if you wanna play like Tiger. Or at least pretend.
Customization is a whole other beast. Custom stampings, paint colors, logos…the works. Maybe now you can flaunt your Alabama pride on the green. Who knew wedges could have school spirit?
So, yeah, that’s pretty much it. If you’re left-handed, sorry. Seems like your options are a bit limited. Maybe next year? These wedges are up for pre-order and officially drop on September 4.
I still can’t believe wedges can be so interesting. Who knew, right?
