Many expected Gervonta “Tank” Davis to make quick work of Lamont Roach in their highly anticipated pay-per-view showdown. Yet, the fight didn’t follow the expected narrative. As reports from Boxing Insider revealed, Roach’s performance exceeded expectations: “He fought so well that many, if not most, believed he deserved the victory.” While I personally thought Davis eked out the win, public opinion largely swayed in Roach’s favor, feeling he should have been the one with his hand raised.
The bout was anything but a walk in the park for Davis. His typically devastating punches failed to faze the determined Roach. In fact, Roach didn’t just absorb the blows; he effectively countered with precise shots of his own, as noted by Boxing Insider. The real bombshell of the night came when Davis unexpectedly took a knee. Curiously, the referee didn’t call it a knockdown, a decision that raised eyebrows. Despite these challenges, the powerful and popular Tank shouldn’t be counted out too soon.
Discussions of a rematch are already buzzing. ESPN reports that both camps are exploring the possibility. Accepting another showdown would be a testament to Davis’ character and willingness to face a formidable challenge head-on. Roach seems to be a thorn in Davis’ side stylistically, and in their first meeting, Davis’ punches couldn’t finish things early, as they often do. If this rematch occurs, Davis will need to dig deep.
For Davis, it’s more than just redemption on the line—it’s about proving his mettle. Giving Roach a second shot would not only show Davis’s sportsmanship but would also shine a spotlight on Roach, who defied expectations in their initial clash. Although it may not be the blockbuster matchup fans initially envisioned, a Davis-Roach rematch would undoubtedly capture the boxing world’s attention.
