Dolphins’ Zach Wilson Reflects on Regrets from Difficult Jets Experience

For Zach Wilson, joining the Miami Dolphins isn’t just about playing football—it’s about embracing a new chapter in his career. Fresh off signing a one-year, $6 million contract, Wilson didn’t shy away from discussing his tumultuous stint with the New York Jets. On the Dolphins’ “Drive Time” podcast, he openly reflected on the challenges he faced during his three seasons there.

“There were definitely things I could have done differently, but all those experiences are part of my story,” Wilson shared.

Wilson’s journey began when he was drafted second overall in 2021, arriving in New York with a cloud of expectations as the new hope after Sam Darnold. Darnold, interestingly, thrived with the Vikings last season, leaving Wilson with big shoes to fill. His first season was rocky, marked by nine touchdowns and 11 interceptions, culminating in the Jets finishing with a 4-13 record.

His second year saw him getting benched after a rough game against the Patriots. A sliver of hope appeared with the legendary Aaron Rodgers joining the team in 2023, but that was short-lived. Rodgers’ Achilles injury just moments into his debut left Wilson to step back into the fray. By the end of his Jets career, Wilson had thrown for 23 touchdowns and 25 interceptions over 34 games—a performance that led to his trade to the Broncos. In Denver, he found himself third on the depth chart behind Bo Nix and Jarrett Stidham.

Despite such twists in his career, Wilson remains optimistic about his future with Miami. Although he’s familiar with facing the Dolphins from his time with the Jets, he’s eager to work alongside head coach Mike McDaniel. “I believe this team, this offense, it all really suits what I’m seeking,” Wilson said. With his fiancée Nicolette Dellanno by his side for support, he seems ready to embrace this fresh start.

The Dolphins, who ended with an 8-9 record last season and missed the playoffs, might just be the perfect place for Wilson to leverage this new opportunity and prove his mettle.
