Following an impressive season, Mekhi Becton finds himself with yet another new team.
After reviving his career with the Eagles last year, Becton, previously a disappointment for the Jets, has agreed to a two-year, $20 million contract with the Chargers, per NFL Network. He’s expected to be a valuable asset in bolstering the offensive line to protect the talented quarterback Justin Herbert.
Standing at a towering 6-foot-7 and weighing in at 363 pounds as of last season, Becton spent four arduous years with the Jets, who had high hopes when they selected him 11th overall in the 2020 draft. His time there was plagued by injuries and unmet expectations, culminating in two knee injuries. When his contract was up, the Jets let him go, and he soon joined the Eagles on a one-year deal.
In Philadelphia, Becton made a pivotal shift from his traditional role as a tackle to playing guard, which paid off handsomely. He managed to start in 15 regular-season games, as well as all four postseason matches, ultimately contributing significantly to the Eagles’ success in winning Super Bowl 2025.
Now just 25, Becton demonstrated his resilience and skill on the field last year, earning a commendable 70.7 overall grade from Pro Football Focus, ranking him 20th among NFL guards. Reflecting on his past struggles with the Jets, Becton shared with The Post’s Mark Cannizzaro after his Super Bowl victory, “There were definitely dark days, for sure… It just feels good to actually cry tears of joy.”
Becton’s dedication and perseverance have been a testament to his character. “I’m one of those guys that’s going to work no matter what,” he remarked. “Good things come to people who do good things. I’ve put the work in, and now I’m being rewarded for it.”
Though the Eagles have lost key players like Josh Sweat, Milton Williams, and C.J. Gardner-Johnson, along with Becton, his move marks a new chapter and an exciting challenge with the Chargers.
