Mercedes F1 chief Toto Wolff has firmly put to rest any rumors about bringing Max Verstappen into the fold, emphasizing that his attention remains firmly on his current drivers, George Russell and the newcomer, Kimi Antonelli.
Amid the buzz leading up to this weekend’s Australian Grand Prix, Wolff made it clear there’s no intention of circling back to his previous 2024 interest in the Red Bull sensation. This comes as Russell steps into a crucial year of his contract.
After Lewis Hamilton’s surprising move to Ferrari for the 2024 season, Wolff brought the 19-year-old Antonelli on board to team up with Russell, who has since taken on a leadership role. Although Wolff had shown interest in Verstappen in the past, he now confirms the four-time world champion isn’t part of his future plans.
### Commitment to the Current Line-Up
Wolff didn’t mince words about his priorities: “We need to concentrate on our driver line-up,” he stated in Melbourne.
“I don’t flirt outside if I’m in a good relationship. So at the moment, that [approaching Verstappen] is not on any radar.”
This statement reflects a strong commitment to Russell and Antonelli, quashing any hype about a sensational driver switch, at least for now.
He also touched on Russell’s future, given that the Briton’s contract is due to expire in 2025.
“I don’t plan to shift my concentration away from these guys and [want to] make sure that George has some visibility very soon, or has a contract very soon,” Wolff added. “We’ll find some time, I guess, before the summer, but we’ll do it in a timely manner without disrupting the season.”
### Russell Focused on Performance
Russell, fresh off a stellar 2024 season where he clinched two Grand Prix victories and often outpaced Hamilton, has undoubtedly showcased his talent.
Yet, the Brit insists his main focus isn’t on contract talks but on Mercedes’ comeback.
“We have had such a long-term relationship and so much trust between one another. We are focused on getting Mercedes back on top and trying to win races and championships,” Russell mentioned in response to Wolff’s statements.
“Performance speaks, so from my side, there is no pressure,” he went on. “I have no doubts about myself and everything falls into place when the timing is right. We have bigger fish to fry right now, which is getting us back on top.”
With Russell at the helm and Antonelli gaining experience, Wolff dispelling Verstappen rumors demonstrates a steady plan for Mercedes.
As the team looks to reclaim its top spot, starting in Melbourne, both Wolff and Russell are on the same page – striking deals can wait when the ultimate prize is within reach.
