Paddy Pimblett Advocates for Title Shot and Challenges ‘Idiot’ Poirier

Paddy Pimblett, a UFC lightweight fighter known for his candid nature, is gearing up for a pivotal match. With a win against Michael Chandler, Pimblett aims to secure a shot at the championship, eyeing a future encounter with a legendary lightweight set to retire soon.

Ranked #12 with a record of 22-3, Pimblett is stepping into the co-main event on the highly anticipated UFC 314 card, where he’ll face #7 ranked Michael Chandler. For the Liverpool fighter, there’s more than just victory riding on this match.

“This is my first five-round fight in the UFC and the first real co-main event I’m part of,” Pimblett shared with ESPN Deportes. “Last time, I was bumped up to co-main event due to a cancellation. I’m thrilled to head to Miami for this one.”

Pimblett is optimistic about his career trajectory. “It’s a fantastic opportunity to climb the rankings. Beating Michael Chandler could boost me to rank 7, putting me potentially one win away from a title shot,” he explained.

There’s a precedent for such an opportunity; past victories over Chandler have led others directly to title contention—a path Pimblett is keen to follow, referencing Charles Oliveira as a prime example.

“Charles just got a shot after besting Chandler,” Pimblett remarked. “So, if he could do it, why couldn’t I get a title shot after beating Chandler?”

For Pimblett, this fight is more than just about rankings. It’s about silencing critics. “After I defeat Chandler, there won’t be much left for the naysayers to dispute,” he emphasized.

Aiming to prove himself, Pimblett has his sights set on UFC lightweight icon Dustin Poirier, who has stated that he desires a ‘legends only’ bout for his final fight, dismissing Pimblett from that category.

“He said something about me recently, claiming it’s all about ‘legends’ and doubting my chances against Chandler,” Pimblett recounted. “But if you ask me, Poirier should reconsider retirement since he looked strong in his last fight. Perhaps he’s underestimating me, but I’m confident I can beat him. I’d relish the chance to take him on.”
